Retour

Jorge Macchi at the Eduardo Sivori Museum of Fine Arts, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

May 28 — August 9, 2026

Ruth Benzacar Galería de Arte is pleased to invite you to the opening of Jorge Macchi’s first solo exhibition at the Eduardo Sívori Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires.

Retour is a return to the city of Buenos Aires as a territory of exploration. The exhibition brings together handwritten notes, discarded papers, photographs, sound pieces, and installations collected by the artist over the past few years.

Addresses, shopping lists, and objects, reminders, drafts of letters, pages from personal diaries, instructions, and diagrams found on the street—texts that were never intended to be read by others—are at the heart of this project. Discarded, crumpled, and dirty papers that once had a clear function. Suspended between intimacy and exposure, these anonymous fragments serve as involuntary traces of everyday lives.

The exhibition presents a collection of memory aid papers found on the street alongside photographs taken during the search and a series of 18 pieces based on those papers, treating them as potential instructions for objects, sound pieces, sculptures, maps, and graphological analyses, developed works derived from these findings.

As part of the exhibition, a meal will be prepared by a chef using a handwritten list of ingredients found in one of the recovered notes. The exhibition also includes a picture disc on vinyl containing two compositions by Edgardo Rudnitzky, a musician and sound artist who has collaborated with Macchi on many works since the Buenos Aires Tour in 2004, including the Argentine representation at the 2005 Venice Biennale. Printed with a map of the neighborhood where the searches took place, the central hole of the vinyl precisely coincides with the location of Macchi’s studio.

Retour resumes the universe initiated by Buenos Aires Tour (2004), a collaborative project between Jorge Macchi, Edgardo Rudnitzky, and María Negroni that proposed an alternative guide to Buenos Aires through itineraries generated by the lines of broken glass on a map of the city.

In parallel with the exhibition, Jorge Macchi will announce the publication of Retour, edited by KBB, Kültur Büro, Barcelona.
